The Coddling of the American Mind

My favorite takeaways from Jonathan Haidt and Greg Lukianoff's best seller.

Howdy from Raleigh,

Here are my top 10 takeaways from The Coddling of The American Mind.

What’s this book about?

Here’s the formal summary from the book’s publisher, Penguin Random House:

Something has been going wrong on many college campuses in the last few years. Speakers are shouted down. Students and professors say they are walking on eggshells and are afraid to speak honestly. Rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide are rising—on campus as well as nationally. How did this happen?

First Amendment expert Greg Lukianoff and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt show how the new problems on campus have their origins in three terrible ideas that have become increasingly woven into American childhood and education: What doesn’t kill you makes you weaker; always trust your feelings; and life is a battle between good people and evil people.

These three Great Untruths contradict basic psychological principles about well-being and ancient wisdom from many cultures.  Embracing these untruths—and the resulting culture of safetyism—interferes with young people’s social, emotional, and intellectual development. It makes it harder for them to become autonomous adults who are able to navigate the bumpy road of life.

10 takeaways

  1. Three Great Untruths: The book identifies three harmful ideas spreading in society: Fragility (what doesn't kill you makes you weaker), Emotional Reasoning (always trust your feelings), and Us Versus Them (life is a battle between good people and evil people).

  2. Impact on Mental Health: The embrace of these untruths is linked to rising anxiety, depression, and suicide rates among teens, partly due to the promotion of fragility and emotional reasoning.

  3. Cognitive Distortions in Education: Students are increasingly demanding protection from speech and ideas they find uncomfortable, a trend contrary to the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy, which seeks to correct such distortions.

  4. Role of Social Media: The book discusses the influence of social media in amplifying negative trends, such as promoting a callout culture, fostering division, and contributing to mental health issues among youths.

  5. Overprotection in Parenting: Modern parenting trends focused on safety and overprotection are creating fragility in children, depriving them of necessary experiences to develop resilience and independence.

  6. Educational Environment: Colleges are described as ideal environments for intellectual challenge, yet the culture of fragility and emotional reasoning is compromising this role. The authors advocate for exposure to a range of ideas and perspectives.

  7. Shift in Academic Culture: There's a concern about the ideological uniformity and the decline in viewpoint diversity on campuses, which can impact the quality of education and intellectual discourse.

  8. Impact of Paranoid Parenting: The book highlights the negative consequences of paranoid parenting, which teaches children the world is full of dangers and promotes the three Great Untruths, leading to a culture of safetyism in education.

  9. Importance of Facing Adversity: The authors emphasize the value of facing challenges and stressors in developing resilience, critical thinking, and mental toughness.

  10. Need for Educational Reform: The book calls for a reevaluation of educational and societal practices to foster an environment where young people are encouraged to engage with diverse viewpoints, build resilience, and think critically.
